Consume/Collapse

This project primarily explores the issue of food waste caused by overbuying and expired food.

The game transforms these issues into an interactive environment where players collect food in a world where fresh and soon-to-expire items constantly fall from the sky. Players must weigh the scarcity and abundance and make decisions accordingly.

Through mechanisms such as varying falling speeds and limited-time promotions, the game simulates the connection between consumer behavior and food waste in the real world. Its goal is not merely entertainment, but to encourage players to reflect on the causes of waste: impulsive consumption, excessive promotions, and the fragile lifespan of perishable goods.

Inspiration

In my daily life, I've noticed that a lot of food is thrown away in shopping malls, restaurants, and even at home. Especially in buffet restaurants, every time I go there, I see plates of leftover food being taken away and thrown away.

Food waste refers to food that is discarded during the production, transportation, sales and consumption process, even though it could have been eaten. We investigated the percentage of food waste at each stage.

Summary: Food waste can occur at every stage, from the initial food production to transportation and sales, and finally to the consumer.

A horizontal comparison of multiple countries shows that the higher the average temperature in a country, the higher the per capita food waste at the household level tends to be,also indicating food waste is not just a rich-country issue. Take Saudi Arabia as an example, it is a high tempture country.

RESEARCH

”The classical issuing model is unrelated to the standard inventory management issues of regular balancing of stock levels to minimize system operating costs.“

“An inflow of food unbalanced with regard to the outflow required can be assumed to be the only root cause of food waste… anything that creates variation will make forecasting more difficult.”

The core of food waste is the multi-stage and multi-cause loss of resources from input to consumption. These losses are time-sensitive, irreversible, cumulative, and affect the sustainability of the economy, environment, and society.

The majority of the samples reported moderate or high levels of waste, while only a minority reported “almost no waste.” The most common reasons for this were expired and spoiled food, and impulsive purchases leading to stockpiling.

DESIGN CONCEPT

This game revolves around the issue of food waste, focusing on food waste caused by irrational purchases of near-expiry foods and promotional activities. Different game mechanics effectively reflect these problems. Players will understand the principles behind food waste and realize that over-purchasing actually leads to even greater waste.

Implement in-game UI using code to update the status when the player catches food, which can be used to provide players with in-game information.

By playing this game, people can gain a deeper understanding of how their daily food purchasing habits contribute to food waste. This will encourage them to try to change their behavior, such as buying near-expiry food and making more rational purchases.
